I turned off the TV. I’m going with the no news is good news theory. Read that phrase again assuming that all you hear is bad news. No news is good news right now so I am choosing to put my head in the sand and not listen to it any longer. I’ve heard enough about the collapse of financial infrastructures and credit markets imploding on themselves, Hurricane Ike and nor’easters pounding the East Coast, and political discord, and Presidential debates. It has never been more clear to me that Congress couldn’t get a clean bill passed even if the resolution stated “the sky is blue.”  Blue would be in question-resulting in bipartisan bickering with a sinister attempt by true blue Democrats to make Republicans look bad, being red and all. And well, then you’d have Treasury Secretaries on their knees begging for support. It just isn’t pretty. News has become so sensationalized and so gloomy, I’m turning it off. Care to join me?

    I so agree with this post! I’m so tired of everything being so sensationalised and emotional in the news -sure it shouldn’t be void of emotion but I think people have enough on their plate let alone the media pointing a spotlight on the same depressing stories all the time. I think its lost its balance.

    I really enjoyed reading your post although I am going at it from a different route…seeing as we don’t have english cable here…(or at least affordable english cable)…I am joining you by not going to foxnews and msnbc all the time to read the most resent updates! UGG…I’m far away and it still makes me want to FREAK OUT!

    I experienced life without television for one year recently. This wasn’t necessarily by choice, as I moved to a new state into a home who did not want to watch television. They felt they could learn what they needed to know about the world through online sources and avoid the rest of the junk from filtering into their home.
    At first I thought they were a little far out, fringe people taking it to the extreme. One year later, though, I can tell you it did an amazing work in my life learning to live without the television. I learned more discipline, filled my life with better things, and had richer relationships with those I lived with.
    I challenge you to turn it off for awhile. You will be blessed!

    Well, you made me laugh in my gloomy day. And quite the rhetoric out of you…you are brilliant…should have been an anchorwoman. I turned the tv off 2 1/2 years ago when I went through a severe depression and never turned it back on partly by conviction but partly cause it broke. And once I got back on my feet, it didn’t matter to me anymore. I had to find out what was real and what wasn’t. It does make you appear to be a little bit out of sync w/o tv, but there’s so much else to do worth reading or listening to. Thought I couldn’t live without it. I don’t want to live with it.

    I like having my head in the sand on this one bc my hubs asked me all these questions about the news and I couldn’t really talk to him about it bc I didn’t know. It was the most depressing thing we would have talked about in a long time. Wasn’t in the mood! 🙂 I’ll join ya.

    TV is something the Lord has worked on me about, and He prompted me to find a good God-glorifying book, and my TV rarely gets turned on these days. I watch our local news early in the AM just for the weather and a little bit of local news, then the TV gets turned off!

    I had to make this resolve the other day to try and lower my stress factor. It’s silly to be stressed about this. God is not surprised. God is still in control. That should be good enough for me.

    Last night I watched 1 show and made sure to avoid the news at all cost. This morning I watched the weather and that’s it.

    News will distract me and will tempt me to take my focus off the Lord – our Shepherd Who does not and will not leave us in want or lack.
