It’s a sweet evening at our house. Lindsay is home after finishing her semester well at U-Texas. Right now, she’s playing the piano and I’m humming to Kermit’s “Rainbow Connection” as I sip on a cup of tea and eat several of my favorite cookies. I wished I could tell you that they are homemade but I can’t make them this good. They taste like my mother’s “tea cakes” that she made, and they were her favorite cookie. Only I can’t make them that good–did I mention that already? I tried so many times to get them thin and crisp and finally found this place that saves me all kinds of grief and replicates the flavor. Has to be the pound of real butter, but we try not to think about it.
I’m actually sitting here smiling again over the one-liner in the car this weekend. Mike can be very clever when he doesn’t try. We had gotten Lauren the ammonite fossil for her graduation gift, but we didn’t have enough time to wrap it before we left. I found some non-Christmas paper, a ribbon, some tape and scissors, and set it all out with the intention of making a pretty package once we got there. Inevitably, we go through the checklist as we head out, even though it is too late to do much about it. I started drilling Mike, “Did you get the gift and the wrapping paper?”
Oh, yes, he said. “I got it all–rock, scissors, paper.” And he won before I even knew we were playing. Kermit would be proud. I think there is a rainbow connection–the lovers, the dreamers, and me.
