Kashi for breakfast, a boiled egg for lunch. By
three p.m., there’s nothing to munch.Diets are cruel demanding and lean. They lack the
appeal of finer cuisine.
And if that you think all this you despise, just
wait until you get to the exercise.
I have never liked exercise. I just don’t. I did it because I knew it was good for me, but I swear I have never met an endorphin from a workout. For two solid years, I worked out every day except the weekend and was diligent in every way. I had a routine like that. People called me self disciplined. I should have taken some joy in that, but every day I felt like the little Dunkin’ donut man as I got up with the alarm, “Time to make the donuts. Time to make the donuts.” Speaking of donuts, ah well, there goes the self discipline again. It starts with those evil thoughts. Anyway, after two years of being very dedicated, one day I just stopped and never picked it back up as a habit again. Who said it only takes twenty-one days to make a habit? I want to talk to that guy.

There is a woman in our neighborhood that rides her bicycle like a maniac. She has an old fashioned handlebar bike, and crouches down with her head looking up. Her long, dark, wavy hair blows behind her and I can’t help but think of Mrs. Glutch from “The Wizard of Oz.” If I were a kid, I’d be scared to death of her. Okay, she still scares me. Or what she represents. I have this metaphor in my head of exercise looking like that.
So, all this reminiscing to say I have to get back into the habit. I am reading a book that talks about aerobic deficiency syndrome. It’s called The Maffetone Method. The list of symptoms looks like what I would take to my doctor right now, so I am most intrigued with the remedy for this. You know the answer. But the level of activity may surprise you. He says to be aerobic, it really isn’t that hard to get your heart rate up to that level. To stay in that level apparently is the trick. Anyway, I turned over another new leaf today and am on the wagon again, the exercise wagon, or maybe I’m the horse pulling it.
An interesting side: it is raining in Houston today, so the dog and I might have to just read the exercise book instead of putting it to the test. Wonder if there are any donuts around here…Maybe it’s time.
